Member Protection Policy (MPP): Our MPP describes the standards of appropriate behaviour for members and the GFAs requirements to ensure a safe, respectful and appropriate sporting environment.

Member Protection Policy (MPP): Our MPP describes the standards of appropriate behaviour for members and the GFAs requirements to ensure a safe, respectful and appropriate sporting environment. It describes how members can be protected from harassment, discrimination, abuse and child protection issues. It is supported by our Complaints and Discipline policy, and both policies can be found on the GFA web page documents section under admin docs. The GFA Board has just approved an update to the MPP which now specifically includes cyber bullying and social media. All members are encouraged to make themselves aware of the policy and to ensure that all members are protected from inappropriate behaviour.

Part 149 submission
Several members sent feedback on the GFA submission to CASA re part 149 and the board has now submitted an amended response. Many members also submitted their own response using the CASA feedback survey - thanks to all those who made the effort. Part 149 will define the ongoing relationship between CASA and the GFA and hopefully ensure increased autonomy for sports aviation. There are a few issues included in the CASA proposal that must be modified if GFA is to agree to become a Part 149 organisation. So, much discussion and planning is required before you will see any final recommendation from the GFA Board.

GFA marketing plan
The Board has approved contracting of some professional assistance to develop a marketing plan for the GFA. Membership growth is the critical issue that we face as an organisation, and that each club faces if they are to survive. One aspect of this membership growth is retaining members, the other is attracting members. The M&D team will get some assistance from the Melbourne-based organisation Sports Community to create and then implement a marketing plan with which we can improve awareness of gliding and increase approaches from identified target groups.

Club Health check report
We now have 18 clubs who have responded to the Club Health Check Survey
Victoria: Beaufort, Bendigo, Geelong, Horsham, Mount Beauty, South Gippsland
SA: Barossa Valley, Waikerie
WA: Beverley, Narrogin
NSW: Bathurst, Canberra, Hunter Valley
Qld: Caboolture, DDSC, Kingaroy, North Queensland, Warwick
There is sufficient data for us to identify best practice examples under each of the criteria tested in the survey. This will be published shortly and can be used by clubs who have responded to identify areas for improvement and planning.
I have had feedback from some clubs indicating that they are reluctant to participate because they don’t like all of the questions, or they don’t know some answers or some questions are not clear. The simple answer is that members don’t have to answer every question. The club can disregard questions that they think are confusing and just leave them blank. The results are sent as they are back to the club, with all names removed. The survey results are for the club to consider, no one else. If you ask all your members to respond, you might learn what your members really think.

GoToMeeting support for regions and clubs
The Board/Exec have been using GoToMeeting for some time for web based meetings. A few clubs and regions are expressing interest in using this type of facility, so if you are interested please let me know and I can arrange it for you. [This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.]. There is a cost of something like $50-$70pa. It enables you to run meetings with your members at any time. They join through their computer or phone, and you can share screens and documents, etc. It is more reliable than Skype. I’d be happy to give you a demo.

IT developments
So far 27 members have opted for monthly membership payments - our Recurring Membership option. This is available when you renew your membership and takes away the shock of a single annual payment.
You can access a lot of information through the MyGFA/SOAR Reports section on the web page. Enter your own details to log in - membership number and date of birth - and you can then choose from a range of information.
You can check out your own profile to see what qualifications and ratings are recorded for you, and update these records if anything is not current.
If you click on ‘confirm member details’ and hit submit, you can then type in any member’s name and see their status and qualifications - ideal for checking on visiting pilots. You can also order an Annual Inspection kit for your glider

Women in Gliding
A forum for women members (WIG forum) has been established and is proving quite popular. If you are a woman and you would like to join the WIG Forum please let me know and I can add you to the list.
It is hoped that this forum can be used to gain suggestions and support for activities intended to grow our female membership and to support our Women’s World Gliding Championships in 2019.

Aviate in April
Previously called Join in June (April is a much better month), this is an encouragement to members and clubs to bring a friend gliding and encourage them to join. For each person who takes out 12 months’ membership in April 2017, the GFA will reimburse half of the membership fee to the club. The club can pass this on to the member or use the money for other activities. If the member renews their membership in 12 months’ time, the GFA will reimburse half of the second year’s membership fee.

Encouraging other aviators to try gliding
The GFA Board has agreed to offer a 25% membership discount for new members who are already a member of the HGFA, RAAus or other sportaviation association for their first 12 months of GFA membership. The membership application form will be amended shortly to enable this.
